Two Decades. Forty Books. Countless Voices Empowered.

Literature and writing professor turned author, editor, speaker, and writing coach.

I’ve worked in publishing as a writer, ghostwriter, and editor for more than 20 years, serving as the lead or contributing writer for more than 30 books, including multiple New York Times bestsellers, and editing a dozen more.

The past two decades have given me the opportunity to work in genres as diverse as athlete and celebrity memoirs, history, biography, spirituality, business, self-improvement, pop culture, academic, and advocacy.

You can learn about my recent titles such as Fear is a Choice: Tackling Life’s Challenges with Dignity, Faith, and Determination with NFL running back James Conner (Harper, 2020); Espionage and Enslavement in the Revolution: The True Story of Robert Townsend and Elizabeth (Lyons, 2021); and my newest book, To Rebehold the Stars: Reimagining Faith and Formation After Deconstruction (Eerdmans, forthcoming March 2026) below and on my Books page.

I have also written numerous articles for publications such as Smithsonian, New York Archives Magazine, and various peer-reviewed journals, and I offer keynotes on topics ranging from the craft of writing to rebuilding healthy faith after religious trauma.

I received my PhD in Literature from Florida State University, an MA in Classics from the University of Bristol (UK), and an MA in Spiritual Formation from Portland Seminary. I’ve taught literature and writing at Abilene Christian University, McMurry University, and the University of South Carolina-Beaufort. I currently teach nonfiction in the Professional Writing Program at the University of Oklahoma.

I specialize in creative and commercial nonfiction, developmental and structural editing, and manuscript coaching. My passion is helping to bring stories to life, walking alongside authors to refine their voice, strengthen their narrative, and shape ideas into books that matter.

Support Local, Independent Bookstores

Buy my books through Bookshop.org to support me and local, independent bookstores.

(The FTC requires that I tell you that a small portion of sales of books purchased through this link may go to me in addition to indie bookstores. But I'm just going to end up sinking that back into supporting things like snacks at book signings hosted by local, independent bookstores. It's a vicious, delicious cycle.)
